Chinese Medicine and Menopause

Women's Health

Menopause is the natural end of a woman's periods. Acupuncture has been found to be around 90% effective in treating menopause symptoms. Menopause can happen naturally, or it can come about as the result of surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.  It is caused by damage to or removal of the ovaries.

During menopause, a woman has lower levels of estrogen and progestin in her system. From a TCM perspective, it comes about due to the decline in life energy, called Jing, and causes an imbalance between Yin and Yang. At this phase of her life, a woman's body begins to conserve blood and energy to sustain her vitality. Excess Yang can lead to hot flashes, restlessness, mood swings, heart palpitations, water retention, cold hands/feet, weight gain, and swelling.

Chinese Medicine and Fertility

Fertility

Treatment for infertility in women via Acupuncture and Chinese herbs (TCM) has been available since ancient times. The ancient Chinese believed that healthy women would give birth to strong and healthy children. TCM has shown to be effective in treating infertility and in supporting women undergoing IVF. Further research is needed to identify the most effective applications.

Chinese Medicine and Women's Health

Women's Health

The ancient Chinese paid close attention to women's reproductive health, because they believed that a healthy woman would deliver healthy, strong children. Today, we know that women's reproductive health is important, not only for that reason, but because hormones affect so many other aspects of a woman's health. The endocrine system is tied to all bodily systems, and acupuncture's effect on stress hormones may account largely for improvement in reproductive health. (PubMed, 2009)
